Strawberry Champagne
- Ingredients
- Fresh Strawberries: 1 cup plus extra for garnish
- Champagne or Sparkling Wine: 1 bottle 750 ml
- Simple Syrup: 2 tablespoons adjust to taste
- Fresh Lemon Juice: 1 tablespoon optional
- Mint Leaves: a few for garnish optional
Instructions
Prep the Strawberries:
Wash the strawberries thoroughly. Hull them (remove the green tops) and cut them in half.
In a mixing bowl, muddle the strawberries with a muddler or the back of a spoon. This releases their juices, enhancing the flavor of the cocktail.
Make the Simple Syrup (if not using store-bought):
Combine equal parts of sugar and water in a small saucepan (1 cup each is good).
Heat over medium heat until the sugar is fully dissolved, stirring occasionally. Allow it to cool before using. This can be made in advance and stored in the refrigerator.
Combine the Ingredients:
In a cocktail shaker, combine the muddled strawberries, simple syrup, and fresh lemon juice (if using).
Add a handful of ice to the shaker and shake well for about 10 seconds to chill the mixture.
Strain the Mixture:
Use a fine mesh strainer to strain the strawberry mixture into a pitcher or directly into your champagne flutes. This removes the pulp, giving you a smooth drink.
Add Champagne:
Carefully pour the champagne or sparkling wine into each glass, filling it about three-quarters full. Gently stir to combine the strawberry mixture with the champagne.
Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with a fresh strawberry on the rim of the glass or a mint leaf for a refreshing touch.
Serve immediately and enjoy the bubbly goodness!
Variations
Non-Alcoholic Version: Substitute champagne with sparkling water or non-alcoholic sparkling wine. This version is great for those who prefer a non-alcoholic option.
Flavored Variations: Experiment with other fruits like raspberries, blueberries, or even peach puree for a twist.
Herbal Twist: Add fresh basil leaves instead of mint for a unique flavor profile.
Tips and Substitutions
Champagne Selection: Use a dry champagne (brut) to balance the sweetness of the strawberries. Prosecco or Cava are also excellent choices.
Simple Syrup Alternatives: For a healthier option, consider using honey or agave syrup instead of simple syrup, adjusting the quantity to taste.
Dietary Needs: For gluten-free options, ensure your sparkling wine is labeled gluten-free.
